Most mature systems of law have found it necessary to provide, outside the fields of contract and civil wrongs, for the restoration of benefits on grounds of unjust enrichment.49 There are many circumstances in which a defendant may find himself in possession of a benefit which, in justice, he should restore to the plaintiff.
