Ask-TransLex, our new AI, just went live.

When we announced it some time ago, we said that the AI-supported semantic search would make the knowledge contained in TransLex more accessible and easier to connect. You can now put that to the test.

What changes compared to the keyword search:

• Search by meaning, not by wording. You no longer need to know the exact term a principle or source uses. Describe an event that makes performance excessively onerous, and you will be led to hardship even if you never type the word.

• Ask in your own words. Put your legal question in a full sentence instead of guessing the right combination of keywords.

• See the connections. Related principles, commentary and comparative references appear together, so one query opens up the wider context of a rule.

This is a beta version. It will make mistakes, and we want to hear about them. If a result is wrong, incomplete or missing, please let us know at feedback@trans-lex.org. Every report helps us improve TransLex for everyone who uses it.

Kudos to Karl Leonhard Fiehler for conceiving, developing and coordinating the project, to David Niclas Hand for some much needed QA and to Carl Farnschläder for assistance on regulatory matters.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the concept of the Creeping Codification of transnational law. This idea provides the theoretical underpinning for the TransLex-Principles. The German treatise "Formalisierte oder 'Schleichende' Kodifizierung des transnationalen Wirtschaftsrechts" was published by Professor Berger in 1996. The book was later also published in English in two editions with Wolters Kluwer ("The Creeping Codification of the New Lex Mercatoria", 1999 and 2010). In their Annexes, these books contained comprehensive and ever-growing lists of principles and rules of transnational commercial law. These printed lists form the starting point for the TransLex-Pinciples in their current digital form.

Two important new developments for our users:

a) the TransLex Team has collected new comparative law materials (mostly arbitral awards) for the TransLex-Principles which will be uploaded until the end of the year;

b) we are in the process of developing an AI tool. The semantic search through the new TransLex-AI will make the knowledge contained in TransLex faster, more accessible and easier to connect.
